SSBTN NC 2. Charlotte (NC.) Military Institute Coat Button.

SU. 21 mm. Very rare military school button. The Charlotte Military Institute was founded in 1858. Confederate General Daniel Harvey Hill served as the President of the Board of Directors and instituted a curriculum akin to that at West Point. Almost all of the cadets and staff entered Confederate service and the building was used as a Confederate hospital during the war. The historic building was destroyed in 1954 for a construction project.

TX 33, 16 mm. One of the scarcest Texas Militia buttons. This unit was organized by Hiram Granbury in 1861 and became Co. A of the 7th Texas Infantry, evidently some of the Waco Guards also served in the 1st and 4th Texas Regiment as these buttons have been dug in their camps in Virginia. Blazing gold beauty…like 95% gold on a perfect face. Back has small area of rust through but overall quite solid. Straight up shank. Extremely rare in cuff size. Found in the camp of the 1st Texas Vol. Infantry in Prince William Co. VA. by Jim Gumley in 1983. “SCOVILLS & CO. EXTRA” bm.

VA 19, 23 mm. Rare button with bizarre balloon headed figures. According to Tice, there are various theories surrounding this controversial button, some to the effect that Steele and Johnson who produced these buttons, were covertly selling to the Confederacy after the war broke out and trying to imitate crude Virginia local made variants. Condition is superb. Very high convex dome and deformed channel back.
