Remarkable Confederate relic. The button has a green patina with gold plating. I did not want to peel back the fabric, but I am sure that it has the desirable “W.G. MINTZER/Phil./1861” back mark. GA 18 (Alberts) 23 mm. This unit consisted of Irish immigrant volunteers from the City of Savannah GA. Organized in 1842, it was named after William Jasper, a hero of the Battle for Fort Moultrie and casualty of the British Siege of Savannah. In the Civil War, this unit formed Company A of the 1st GA. Vol. Infantry Regt. The condition of this button is superb. Smooth green patina with gold plating. Sharp details. No pushes or repairs. Shank missing. “BENEDICT & BURNHAM” bm. Found near Savannah GA. NC 8, 23 mm. Confederate produced button with no issues. Note remnants of gold plating and copper back. “W. WILDT & SON/RICHMOND VA.” bm. This button was collected during (or shortly after) the war by Captain Luis F. Emilio, Co. E, 54th Mass. Vol. Infantry Regt. He was one of the white officer’s leading this famous African-American regiment. He served gallantly at Battery Wagner and also led troops at the Battle of Olustee Fl. After the war, Emilo authored the book “Brave Black Regiment” (published in 1891). Emilio was an avid button collector and published a landmark book on collecting military buttons in 1911. Albert’s and Tice both associate it with the State of Texas but there are two known uniforms with these buttons, and they are both identified to Tennessee Officers. Some of those buttons have a “HOME MADE/LOUISVILLE KY.” bm. Excellent condition with sharp details. Features a five-pointed star on a lined field surround by the motto “SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY“. No pushes, cracks, or repairs. Reverse has a blank back with two concentric lines. Intact shank. This button was recently acquired fron a Mississippi family and has not been cleaned or messed with since the surrender in 1865. A very desirable Confederate button indeed.
