USBP 4. US M-1839 Enlisted Man’s Belt Buckle with Adjuster.

Good looking US oval belt plate with an untouched patina. Note obvious campaign wear. Mid-to late war variant with arrow hooks. Ex. Dennis Urban collection.

USBP 5. Dug US M-1839 Enlisted Man’s Waist Belt Plate.

Unusual buckle with intact leather pad on reverse. These early buckles were issued with buff leather accoutrement belts. Provenance uncertain. Comes with an Ian Workman COA. This variant is similar to the one documented on page 300 of O’Donnell and Campbell’s reference book “American Military Belt Plates”.

Great looking US oval with intact belt hooks and full lead. Maker marked “W.H. SMITH/BROOKLYN”. The classic American Civil War US buckle. Found many years ago by James Tubbesing near Winchester VA.

Classic Union insignia with an untouched patina. Both attachment loops intact. Full lead. Found in the camp of the 18th Massachusetts Infantry Regt. near Falmouth VA. Fredericksburg Campaign.

USBP 13. Dug US M-1839 Enlisted Man’s Cartridge Box Plate. Port Hudson LA.

These small US Plates were mounted on the outer flap of the early pattern US Cartridge Box. They are also seen on some revolver and carbine cartridge boxes. Comes with a Plez Bagby COA. This variant is similar to the one documented on page 323, Fig. 524 of O’Donnell and Campbell’s reference book “American Military Belt Plates”.

Scarce plate with three-pronged double wire hooks. This variant is shown on page 286, Fig. 455 of O’Donnell and Campbell’s reference book “American Military Belt Plates”. Note sharp details and gold plating. This variant was produced by Boyd & Sons but is not marked. Fantastic Civil War insignia.

USBP 16. Dug US Cartridge Box Plate and Breastplate for Cartridge Box Sling. Both Maker Marked “W.H. SMITH/BROOKLYN”.

Top quality and matching US Plates produced under contract for the Federal Army. Smooth chocolate brown patina, full lead, and strong attachment loops. Clearly struck maker stamp on both. Provenance uncertain.

USBP 4. New Hampshire State Militia Accoutrement Belt.

Very rare belt rig with original percussion cap box. Absolutely Civil War issue. The lead filled belt buckle is flawless and was produced the same contractor that made the large “US” shown on page 312, Fig. 504 of O’Donnell and Campbell’s reference book “American Military Belt Plates”. Most likely a Watertown NY. Arsenal product. I have seen one excavated example of the “NHSM” buckle. Condition is excellent overall. The cap box is a little salty with broken latch tab, but does retain wool lining and nipple pick. Some collectors believe that these accoutrements were issued at the end of the war or slightly after.

Boyd and Sons of Boston contract pattern with full lead and all hooks intact. According to the notes of digger Jake Hendricks, it was found at the “Battle of the Vineyards”. Probably Antietam Campaign.

Near pristine example with sharply deatailed “Great Seal of Ohio” on a lined field. Reverse has full lead, and both attachement loops intact. Found near the Malvern Hill VA. Battlefield in 1992.

Outstanding buckle. Flawless, with remants of the original leather belt on the reverse. Found on the Malvern Hill VA. Battlefield in 1992 with the above listed Ohio Breastplate.

Neatly broken along the belt loop side. Loaded with bright gold and silver plating. This fancy buckle was a private purchase item from a jeweler or high end retailer. Found by Lee Rivers near Abbeville SC.

These scarce plates have oversize brass loops on the reverse and distinct fat “US” letters on the face. Supern early dug condition. Provenance uncertain. See page 305, Plate # 290 of O’Donnell & Campbell’s reference book “American Military Belt Plates” for more information. They associate these plates with same contractor that produced the fat lettered “OVM” plates.
