ART 1. Dug Confederate 12 Pounder “Sideloader” Case Shot.

High quality example with intact brass fuse adapter, lead side-loading plug and clean iron. Professionally cleaned and disarmed. Provenance of South Carolina.

ART 2. Dug Confederate 6 Pounder Whitworth Bolt found on the Brandy Station VA. Battlefield.

Extremely rare. Very few known. This one was dug by Gibb Andes and the lettering was painted by M.E. “Mac” Mason. See page 326 of Dickey and George’s Field Artillery reference book for more information on this rarity 10 projectile.

ART 3. Dug US/CS 12 Pounder Solid Shot.

These were used to batter fortifications, mow down massed enemy troops, and destroy enemy batteries. Good condition with some pitting at the bottom. Professionally cleaned and coated for preservation. This one was dug decades ago by Mikey Keim near Yorktown VA. McClellan’s Penninsula Campaign.

ART 4. Dug US 3″ Hotchkiss Shell.

These shells have been found on almost all American Civil War Battlefields. Condition is excellent with intact brass fuse adapter and lead driving band. Note rifling impression from the 3″ Ordnance Rifle it was fired from. Provenance uncertain.

Fakes of these very rare wrenches exist, but this is the real deal. Deep, ancient patina to the brass. Comes with an 8 page letter of authenticity, provenance, and technical information from author, and Civil War artillery expert Jack Melton Jr.

ART 6. Dug US 3″ Schenkl Percussion Fused Shell.

Very good looking shell. Professionally cleaned and disarmed. Designed for use in the US 3″Ordnance Rifle. Clear “J.P. SCHENKL PAT. OCT. 16, 1861” address on fuse. Found many decades ago by Mickey Keim. Cold Harbor VA. area.

ART 7. Excavated Confederate 2.5″ Blakely Shell from Kennesaw, GA.

A rather extreme rarity, this crude shell has a tall, thin sabot that is intact after being fired. The projectile is rebated at the base and was designed to accommodate a wooden drive in fuse adaptor. Once part of Tom Dickey’s collection. Extreme rarity of 10.

ART 8. Dug Confederate “Tennessee Sabot” Shell found on the Spotsylvania VA. Battlefield.

This beauty walked into my friend Nick Harris’ shop in Falmouth. Really sharp iron and intact sabot. This variant is the less common short pattern. Spotsylvania VA. Battlefield.

A good representative example of this common American Civil War projectile. Found long ago by Mickey Keim. Provenance of Gaines Mill/Cold Harbor VA. area.

ART 10. Dug 3″ Armstrong Shell. Extra Tall Pattern. 

Rare tall variant with brass “shunts” or studs that engaged the grooves of the bore. An innovative design from England. Several Armstrong guns were imported by the Confederacy but saw limited use late in the war. This shell is most likely a European or British find.

ART 13. Dug US 3″ Parrott Percussion Fused Shell.

Extraordinary example of Type III variant. Brass ring sabot intact and shows lands and grooves from the Parrott Rifle it was fired from. Zinc anvil cap and slider are present and in great condition. Provenance uncertain.

ART 14. Rare Confederate 2.9″ Read-Parrott Shell with Girardey Percussion Fuse. 

Scarce late war shell for the Confederate Parrott Rifle. Iron is in excellent condition. Fuse appears to be the copper tube originally inserted in a wooden adapter. The serrated anvil cap is removable. Found near Richmond VA. Ex. Keith Kenerly collection.

The most iconic American Civil War artillery projectile. Condition is very good with minor pitting. Found in Northern VA.

ART 16. Dug 2.75″ Confederate 12 Pounder Whitworth Bolt.

Fine example of this iconic Confederate artillery projectile. The Whitworth rifled guns were imported from England by the Confederacy in limited quantities. They outranged all Federal field artillery but could not change the outcome of the war. This bolt was most likely near Petersburg VA.

ART 17. Dug US 3″ Parrott Type I Percussion Fused Shell.

Minty condition with smooth iron. Intact type I wrought iron sabot and intact zinc percussion fuse consisting of a simple anvil cap and slider. Provenance uncertain. Ex. Jerry Keyes collection.

Used in spherical shells and case shots. Very good condition. Good threads.

ART 19. Confederate 12 lb. Spherical Shell.

High quality example. This projectile used a wooden paper time fuse adapter and was used in 12 lb. Napoleon Guns and Howitzers. Provenance uncertain.

ART 20. Sectioned US 3″ Parrott Percussion Fused Shell.

Really good example that clearly shows the brass sabot, powder chamber, and percussion fusing mechanism. Even the brass percussion cap is present on the nipple of the slider. Note remnant of carbonized powder at the bottom.

Typical long variant with intact wrought iron sabot and intact wooden time fuse adapter. Nice iron. Typical lathe dimple on base. A classic Confederate artillery projectile.

ART 22. Type I US 3″ Hotchkiss Common Shell.

Very good representative example of this early war variant without flame grooves. A paper time fuse in a wooden adapter was inserted in the nose before firing. Lead sabot shows lands and grooves of the gun. Designed for use in the US 3″ Ordnance Rifle. Provenance uncertain. Ex. Jerry Keyes collection.

ART 24. US 3.67″ Type I Parrott Shell Used as a Window or Barn Door Counter Weight.

Another example of Southern practicality. 20 Pounder Parrott Shell is in excellent condition with intact wrought iron sabot. Originally purchased from the Horse Soldier in Gettysburg and retains their original tag which states that this shell came from Harper’s Ferry WV. The chain could be removed and the threads chased for a fuse but I like the shell as it is.

ART 25. Minty Type I US 3″ Parrott Shell.

 An exceptional example of this iconic American Civil War projectile. Zinc fuse adapter is marked with a “W” which possibly denotes the Washington D.C. Arsenal.

ART 26. Dug 12 Pounder Grape.

All found in Confederate Defences around Atlanta GA. Balls measure slightly over 2″ and weigh approx. 1.3 lbs.

ART 27. US 3″ Absterdam Shell.

Late war shell in very good condition. Sabot is stamped “ABSTERDAM’S PATENT FEB. 23, 1864.” No fuse.

ART 28. Dug Revolutionary War 4 Pounder Shot.

Great representative example with mild pitting. The Four Pounder Gun was very popular with field artillery batteries of both armies during the revolution because of its manoeuverability. Provenance uncertain.

 Good overall condition with mild pitting to the iron. Note wrought iron sabot. Appears to have been fitted with a makeshift lead time fuse adapter. Possibly ammunition captured by Confederates and re-purposed. Provenance unknown.
